JUST IN: The son of Penny Hardaway will no longer play for his Memphis squad.

Ashton Hardaway is moving on from his season as his father’s player.

The former Memphis freshman forward has moved to Saint Mary’s, apart from his father, head coach Penny Hardaway. The deal was made public by the Gaels on Tuesday.

With three years left of eligibility, 6-foot-8 and 210-pound Hardaway, a former four-star recruit from California, had three starts in 30 games as a true freshman last season. For the Tigers, who ended 22-10 and were not selected to the NCAA Tournament, he averaged 2.3 points in 8.3 minutes per game.

After winning the West Coast Conference championship for the first time since 2019, Saint Mary’s finished 26-8 but lost to Grand Canyon in the opening round of the NCAA championship. Along with three new recruits, the Gales have recruited two transfers, Paulius Murauskas of Arizona and Hardaway.

After playing for Memphis, Penny Hardaway became an All-American and was selected to the NBA All-Star team four times. Having just completed his sixth season as head coach at his former school, he has a 195-133 overall record and has made two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
