JUST IN: Loaned player from Wigan Athletic anticipated to be a free agent

Charlie Goode, who joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Premier League club Brentford in January, was anticipated to be rejuvenated by the transfer.

He’d have a significant amount of game action during his stay at the DW Stadium, with 11 starts and two substitute appearances. Goode would not stick out for the Latics, but he would hold his own in the starting lineup and prove to be a valuable addition to the team.

Wigan finished the season in 12th place and were undefeated in their final five games. A points deduction at the start of the season would ruin any promotion hopes, but there is plenty of hope for the club’s future under Shaun Maloney, who did an excellent job this season given the situation.

Goode’s loan was not entirely successful, with the defender returning to Brentford before the end of the season for personal reasons, according to Maloney. He would, however, captain the team on one occasion, highlighting his leadership abilities and seemed to have regained some confidence.

The defender is now set to become a free agent this summer, having confirmed on his official Twitter account that he will be leaving the Bees.

Given that he only made 20 appearances for the London club, six of which were in the Premier League across four seasons, it’s not surprising that he’ll be leaving this summer. He’ll be available on a free transfer, but it’s unclear whether the Latics would sign him following his loan spell.

Goode has plenty of EFL experience, having played for Scunthorpe United and, more significantly, Northampton Town. If he can get over the last couple of seasons, he might be a valuable asset to any League One club.

He would undoubtedly provide experience to any team in need of it, but he may not be the type of player Maloney seeks in the future as he and his team aim for promotion to the championship.
