Loer played for the Xavier Musketeers, where he was an important member of their bullpen, before attending LSU. In 2023, he was named to the All-Big East second team. With Xavier, the 6-foot-5 lefty pitched in 29 games and 57 innings. In addition to his 6-2 overall record, Loer concluded that year with a 1.89 ERA, a.182 batting average against him, and 63 strikeouts.

Although losing to UNC in the Chapel Hill Regional, LSU had a respectable season this year. After UNC second baseman Alex Madera lined the game-winning single to shut out the Tigers, they lost 4-3 in ten innings. In the team’s official press release following the season, LSU head coach Jay Johnson spoke candidly about his pride in the group.

Coach Jay Johnson of LSU stated, “We held the national championship trophy last year.” “Just as I was that day, I’m just as proud of my team and our program today. This team’s nature is best summed up by where we were in the middle of SEC play. I have never had a more fulfilling coaching year than I do now. I adore these two men. We are plainly here to achieve the task; that is what matters most. I’m heartbroken for no other reason than that I wanted to attend practice on Wednesday.

A year after winning the national championship in the 2023 season, the Tigers finished 43-23 overall and 13-17 in the SEC. They defeated the Florida Gators 6-1, which was one of their biggest victories of the year. Luke Holman, a right-hander for LSU, struck out 13 batters in six innings while allowing just one run on one hit and three walks. He surpassed his previous career high of 12 strikeouts, which he recorded against Texas on March 1.
