Following the pledges of three-star edge rusher Herbert Scroggins and four-star cornerback Chris Ewald on Thursday and Friday, Miami football’s 2025 recruiting class rose to 15th place nationally. The majority of the reactions on social media to the pledges focused on what might happen to Ewald and Scroggins.

Out of Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, Ewald is the 169th prospect, the 21st CB, and the 24th player in Florida for the 2025 class. In the Georgia 2025 class, Scroggins is ranked as the 407th recruit, 29th edge rusher, and 46th player overall. The thirteenth and fourteenth commits in the 2025 Miami class are Ewald and Scroggins.

Miami has six players committed to defense and eight on offense. Ewald is ranked second on defense and fourth overall among Miami commits for 2025. According to 247Sports, Scroggins is ranked fifth on defense and eighth overall in the 2024 Miami class. In June, Ewald and Scroggins traveled to Miami for official business.

Ewald’s father, who wished him a happy birthday on Thursday, was one of his many admirers. Ewald also notes that safety Zaquan Patterson, a 2024 Miami signee, will work with him again to rebuild a world-class secondary.

According to Max Preps, Chaminade-Madonna won the 1M FHSAA Florida State Championship and concluded the 2023 season with a 14-0 record. Mario Cristobal has added many elite defensive backs in the 2024 and 2025 classes, which is a departure from his apparent focus on the line of scrimmage in his first two classes with Miami.

At 6’0 and 165 pounds, Ewald gives Miami good length and the ability to be a shutdown wide receiver. Ewald has recorded 100 tackles, 32 pass breakups, and seven interceptions in his three years of high school. Miami is going to acquire a player that can produce and know when to put himself in position to make a play.

According to Steve Wiltfong of On3, Scroggins has also been a productive player, recording “84 tackles, 12 sacks, 10 more stops for loss, and 14 quarterback hurries” in his junior year of 2023. As an edge rusher, Scroggins, who is 6’2 and 235 pounds, will need to gain weight.

Scroggins discussed his decision to go to Miami with WTOC-11 in Savannah. The two main reasons Scroggins decided to enroll at Coral Gables were the chance to work with Miami defensive line coach Jason Taylor and the humility displayed by Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal.

Two important additions to the 2025 Miami class are Ewald and Scroggins. Ewald’s commitment was essential. It’s important for Miami to get a blue-chip prospect to stay at home. Over the coming weeks, anticipate additional commitments. The formal visitation window for June ended last weekend.

Every year in December, Mario Cristobal has a few surprises planned for the Early National Signing Period. In the past two classes, Miami has switched three Ohio State pledges. Miami flipping a couple talents in the 2025 class during the Early National Signing Period wouldn’t be shocking.
