Italian football icon Roberto Baggio was robbed while watching his nation lose to Spain in the 2024 European Championship, and as a result, he was taken to the hospital.
Around 10 p.m. on Thursday, a group of five armed thugs burst into his family’s home, according to Corriere del Veneto. Baggio tried to approach one of them, but the former Juventus player was struck over the head with a gun’s butt during a brief fight.
The former midfield player suffered a head injuries, and his family was thereafter confined to a room. After that, the thieves stole watches, jewelry, and cash from the house.
Baggio contacted the police after breaking down the door to the room his family was imprisoned in after he was certain the burglars had departed. Baggio was transported to the hospital after they arrived, where he received sutures. It’s reported that his family was upset but unharmed.
Baggio played for Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan—the three most successful teams in Italy—during his whole professional career. He signed with Juventus in 1990, and in his last season there, he won both the Coppa Italia and the Serie A championship.
He joined AC after five years at Turin and won the Scudetto right away. He was awarded the Ballon d’Or during his time at Juventus after he scored twice in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final against Borussia Dortmund.
He became the first Italian to score in three separate World Cups, but his club success was never nearly matched at the international level. In the tournament’s 1994 edition, Baggio guided the Azzurri to the championship match against Brazil.
After extra time, with no goal scored, the game went to penalty kicks. After nine spot-kicks, the score was 3-2. Baggio missed his penalty, giving Brazil the victory.
