BREAKING: Brighton is close to securing a deal with Kieran McKenna

Brighton are pushing to complete a deal to appoint Kieran McKenna as Roberto De Zerbi’s replacement, but they still face competition from Chelsea and Manchester United for the Ipswich manager.

McKenna, who has emerged as one of the brightest young managers in the country after masterminding Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League, is in line to move to the Amex Stadium if all the pieces fall in place. It is understood that certain obstacles have to be overcome if McKenna is to join Brighton, who have a vacancy to fill after parting company with De Zerbi by mutual consent.

Brighton will need to strike a deal with Ipswich, who will be anxious to keep the 38-year-old. McKenna promoted the Suffolk team from League One in 2023, and he surpassed expectations by placing second in the Championship last season.

McKenna’s accomplishments in his brief coaching tenure have made him a wanted man. Chelsea, who are considering sacking Mauricio Pochettino, have met with McKenna’s representatives. United is also interested, and they may not need Erik ten Hag’s services. Although there is confidence that Brighton can reach an agreement, McKenna may wait to see if any vacancies materialize at Chelsea or United.

At this point in his career, he would need to choose whether working in a less demanding atmosphere would better benefit his development. Tony Bloom runs a well-oiled Brighton team, which would allow McKenna time to develop.

Former United backroom employee McKenna has drawn recognition for his attacking football style and high caliber of teaching. Ipswich will be hoping he stays and works to keep them in the top division. However, McKenna would be concerned about whether the collapse of Ipswich might damage his reputation. It will not be simple to close the financial difference, and McKenna can point out that this season all three promoted clubs were demoted.

Ipswich will have to get ready in case he gets lost. Rob Edwards of Luton Town has been mentioned as a possible McKenna substitute.
